Michael Baba, tenor



Born in Potsdam, Germany, Michael Baba studied voice at the "Hanns Eisler" University in Berlin with Heinz Reeh. At present, he regularly works with Bernhardt Adler and Gundula Hinz.



After a first engagement at the opera studio at the Dresden Semperoper, Michael Baba was very quickly offered guest contracts in Schwerin (Tamino/Magic Flute), and Mannheim (Narraboth/Salome). He then became a member of the Theatre of Muenster, followed by an engagement to the Metropoltheater in Berlin, and worked on his operetta repertoire during René Kollo's direction. A guest contract at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz was followed by a fix contract with roles like Duke of Urbino/“Night in Venice“, Symon/“The Beggar Student“,  Hoffmann/“Counts of Hoffmann“, Tom Rakewell/“Rake`s Progress“, Governor, Vanderdendur and Ragotsci in a concert version of „Candide“ as well as Lucio in Wagner's „Liebesverbot“



His repertoire includes Max in Weber's "Freischütz" which he sang in several German theatres (Dessau, Koblenz) at the Vienna Volksoper and the US, Erik (Flying Dutchman) in Dessau and on a tour to Japan, Hans (Bartered Bride) and Parsifal in Koblenz.



In 2006, he made his debut as Parsifal in the Tyrolean Festival of Erl, followed in 2007 by his debut as Siegmund in "The Walkyrie", under the baton of Gustav Kuhn. Between 2006 and 2008, Michael Baba was a guest at Vienna Volksoper singing Max/Freischütz and Matthias Freudhofer/Evangelimann, Pedro in D'Albert's "Tiefland"



In 2008, Michael Baba gave his debut as Florestan in Beethoven's "Fidelio" at the May Festival in Guadalajara under the baton of Johannes Wildner. In 2008/2009, he sang Erik in the premiere of "The Flying Dutchman" at the Opera House of Leipzig under the baton of Leopold Hager and made his debut as Stolzing in the Tyrolean Festival in Erl again with Gustav Kuhn. In 2009/10, he had great success as Florestan in Karlsruhe, as well as in the role of the Prince in Prokofief's "The Love for 3 Oranges in Leipzig and the Emperor in R. Strauss' "The Woman without a Shadow" at the New National Theatre in Tokyo.



He opened the 2010/11 season with the role of King Kreon in Aribert Reimann’s new opera “Medea” at the Opera of Frankfurt, had big success with the role of Andrej in Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa in Bremen (Germany) and as Parsifal in Wroczlaw (Poland).



In 2011/12 he sang roles like Tichon in Katja Kabanova, directed by Harry Kupfer, in Maastricht, and Parsifal and Stolzing at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl.



Future engagements include King Kandaules (Zemlinsky) at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and Tristan at the Tyrolean Festival.



Michael Baba is a demanded concert singer. Among others he sang Beethoven's 9th Symphony" and "Christ on the Mount of Olives", Haydn's "Seasons", Honegger's "King David", Mozart's Requiem and Mahler's "The Song of the Earth" and Missa Solemnis.



Michael Baba has worked with conductors like Sascha Götzel, Leopold Hager, Will Humburg, Lothar Koenigs, Gustav Kuhn, Jun Märkl, Marc Piollett, Christof Prick, Peter Schneider, David Stahl, Johannes Wildner and stage directors like Peer Boysen, August Everding, Johannes Felsenstein, Claus Guth, Marco Maria Marelli, Harry Kupfer, Georg Quander, and Michael Quast.
